Author Biography

Lloyd Alexander

(1924–    )

As a child, Lloyd Alexander read just about everything he could get his hands on. When he was fifteen, Alexander decided to become a writer. His dream would have to be put off, though. Alexander’s parents couldn’t afford to send him to college. After graduating from high school, he found a job as a messenger in a bank.

Alexander spent most of his free time writing and trying to get his stories published. He decided his best bet was to find adventure and then to write about it. In 1943 he joined the army. He worked as an artillery man, a cymbal player, and a first-aid man before he found adventure as a U.S. military intelligence officer. While stationed in Wales, he was enchanted by the folklore and beautiful landscape. He would later use Welsh folklore to inspire his writing.

After the war, Alexander wrote books for a total of seventeen years before he found success by writing fantasy books for children. His most popular series is called the Prydain Chronicles.

Some of Alexander’s recent titles are The Hedera Adventure, The Philadelphia Adventure, and The Remarkable Journey of Prince Jen.
